Once Upon A Time : Clarification

22 Mar 2013
My Idea for the Story teller project was initially to combine the themes time and beauty and the beast to create a book showing symbolism of time with in the story. I now have expanded my idea to be from my initial theme of story teller to Once upon a time to include 4 stories from my childhood e.g Tortoise and the Hare, Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland.

In the gallery I would like to produce a book with the ideas and concepts stated above and a rocking chair mostly to emphasise my theme of Once upon a time and how I used to experience sitting down listening to my grandma read me a story in her rocking chair. I want to allow viewers to get a chance to sit down and experience that feeling. I will add to the chair carving into it, sanding adding bits of yarn bombing but still allowing it to be comfortable to sit on.

“Undine in the Wind” By Arthur Rackham

Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldebrand in order to gain a soul. It is an early German romance, which has been translated into English and other languages.

Arthur would first sketch an outline of his drawing, then lightly block in shapes and details. Afterwards he would add lines in pen and India ink, removing the pencil traces after it had dried. With colour pictures, he would then apply multiple washes of colour until translucent tints were created.

Undine appeared around 1811 And I can only assume it was made in london. Arthur's Illustrations are for published books such as Undine this is not the only book hes illustrated but mainly they are fairy tale style stories.

Rackham's work is often described as a fusion of a northern European 'Nordic' style strongly influenced by the Japanese woodblock tradition of the 19th century. In 1909 he finished his illustrations  for the book Undine By Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué.

Her work is inpiring and simple just using watercolours and inks to then edit using Photoshop.

I wish to see more of her work and just how much she'll improve over the years when her illustrations are so impressive now. Check out her other illustrations on her Deviantart page.

Well known for his beautiful illustrations and his character designs for the final fantasy series.

I find his illustrations breath-taking.
All of his work has an element of "fantasy" within it and uses his imagination to create bold and complex drawings. The way he draws seemingly looks quite traditional but there is also great elements of pattern that almost make me think of Alphonse Mucha.

The Tortoise And The Hare

"Slow and steady wins the race."

As much as this is true and a good moral I do feel I work a tad too slow to keep up with others around me.
I also tend to over load work onto myself from time to time but I would like to find a balance between working and socializing.

Once Upon A Time: Mood Board

Presently

" Once Upon A time " Which I talked briefly about in a previous post, I have now began spouting ideas for my final major project.

My final piece will be placed into a exhibition among other Textile/Fine art pieces.

The foundations to my final piece will be based around time in relatively well known stories such as Beauty and the Beast which has the theme of time using the enchanted rose.

This is the idea I would like to act upon.

                                                          Past

Textiles Fine Art Repetition Project
My previous final piece was based on the theme " Repetition ".

The best part about this was experimenting with printing techniques and having the opportunity to test out laser-cutting fabric.

I took my piece in the direction of naturally occurring patterns which eventually lead me to fish scales.

The biggest influence to me was Green Pockets by Maruja Fuentes. It's such a shame she lost her life to leukemia a couple of years ago it would have been great to see her future concepts and work.

Once upon a time

Once upon a time a  foolish traveler was on a journey. He was foolish because he was easily tricked. The townspeople took advantage of him. On that journey, he was tricked into giving away all his money, clothes, and shoes. But the traveler was foolish, so when the townspeople lied to him saying, “This will really help,” tears would stream down his face and he would say, “Please be happy.”
When he gave away his last belongings, he was naked and ashamed to be seen. So he decided to travel in the forest. Then he met the monsters who lived in the forest. They wanted to eat him, so they tricked him with clever words. Of course, the traveler was fooled and when the monsters asked, he gave up his arms and his legs.
Eventually, the traveler was nothing but a head. He even gave his eyes to the last monster he met. As the monster munched on his eyes he said, “Thank you. I’ll give you this in return.” And left him. But that was a lie, too. His gift was a single piece of paper that had “fool” written on it.
But the traveler cried and cried, saying, “Thank you, thank you. This is the first time anyone’s given me anything. I’m so happy. Thank you. Thank you.” And tears kept flowing from his eye sockets.
And while he was crying…he died.

My Newest Project is Once upon a time. But I find not all stories have to end happy. I find this story interesting to read even now it has a lot of meaning to it and that kindness can go along way but one should try never to be so gullible to be tricked by others. These days I feel the world isn't as kind as it once was and not all people can be trusted to many of us take advantage of others in order to get where they need, I'm not sure this is the best way to go about things.

I'm unsure as to what direction i want to take this project in but I feel stories with a lot more deeper meaning I tend to take an interest in more.
